Curbing the Effects of a Sedentary Lifestyle

We have all heard it before. "Get some exercise and you will feel better." But is that totally true? Yes!! And let me help you discover why!

So right off the bat, let's establish what we mean when we say "sedentary lifestyle." The commonly accepted definition is:

A lifestyle that includes light physical activity associated with typical activities of daily living.

Basically, it's moving less and sitting more. Think about your day: do you sit at a desk or on a couch for a lot of your day? Even teachers who stand in one spot to teach all day could be considered sedentary. To pull some facts from the CDC: More than 60 percent of U.S. adults do not engage in the recommended amount of activity. Approximately 25 percent of U.S. adults are not active at all.

Wait... did I read that right?! Approximately 25 percent of U.S. adults are not active at all?!

Well... we have GOT to change that, because study after study, beginning with a massive 8-year study completed in 2010, has shown us that hypokinetic behavior can complicate and contribute to:

  • metabolic syndrome,

  • high blood pressure,

  • high cholesterol,

  • osteoporosis,

  • osteoarthritis,

  • low back pain,

  • type 2 diabetes,

  • some cancers,

  • obesity,

  • depression and

  • other bio-behavioral conditions.

But, friends, please do not despair. I am here with my shiny yoga mat and dingy cross trainers to tell you that it does not have to be that hard! Journal after journal, physician after physician recommends 150 minutes of intentional movement per week to help curb these effects. I know through my own research and expertise that this 30-minutes-a-day habit (and I recommend doing them in at least 30 minute segments) can work wonders can alter your life completely. 150 minutes, y'all. And this exercise doesn't have to be exceptionally strenuous.

THIS IS WHY I CREATED THE ON-DEMAND WORKOUT OPTION ON MY WEBSITE!
